Our Equestrian Centre

EQUESTRIAN

Abbotsholme is extremely proud of its BHS-approved Equestrian Centre, which is located centrally on school site and next to the school farm. The equestrian centre team work closely alongside the school farm team to make the best use of the school’s estate facilities and provide the best all-round Estate Education for our students.

LESSONS

We have a range of horses available for lessons and, from aged 4+ years, we can cater for a range of abilities. These include complete beginners, those who wish to ride purely for pleasure, as well as the more serious competitor.  Lessons can be factored into a student’s timetables during the school day.  We also run lessons, various clinics and pony days for external clients and pupils at weekends and during the school holidays.

FACILITIES

We have a 50m x 30m all-weather arena which enables horse riding tuition to continue in all but the most inclement weather.  During the summer months we make the most of our school estate by setting up our full set of dressage white boards/letters, a course of show jumps in the fields.

LIVERY

We are a small yard of 12 stables and offer a limited number full or working livery option to students who wish to bring their own horse to school.  Contact equestrian@abbotsholme.co.uk for more information on livery.

CURRICULUM

Through the prep school and years 7 to 9 carousel afternoons all students have the chance to try their hand at riding and learn to take responsibility for the care of horses.

From age 13, we offer BHS training from levels 1 to 3, including teaching.

During years 10 &11 students have the option of taking a BHSQ Diploma Level 2 in Horse Care and Riding. This is a work related qualification to give students the basic knowledge, understanding and skills they need to prepare for employment or further education within the horse industry.  They will learn about the daily care of horses including feeding and watering, handling and horse behaviour.  Pupils are expected to play a full part in the daily running of the Equestrian Centre.

During years 12 & 13 students have the option of taking a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate as an equivalent to 1 A-level.  This is a work related qualification to give students an in depth knowledge and understanding of horse care and management.  They will develop their practical skills on the yard as well as their theoretical knowledge.

As with the rest of school, our class sizes are small so students have the opportunity to learn at their own pace.  Some 6th form students have the option to help out with younger student’s sessions.  Help is always at hand by any member of the equestrian team.

NATIONAL SCHOOLS EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION (NSEA)

At Abbotsholme School, we have our own Equestrian team, that is formed by students that have their own horses. The team competes in dressage, show jumping and arena eventing. Pupils from all age groups are able to join the team if they wish to do so.

Pupils have access to regular training in all three disciplines.
