Equestrian, Livery and Horse Riding at the School

Abbotsholme is extremely proud of its BHS approved Equestrian Centre, which is located within the school grounds, conveniently close to the heart of the school. We offer full and working liveries to the pupils, and many pupils choose to keep their own horse at school. Pupils learn to take responsibility for the care of their horses, as well as progressing through the BHS or NVQ qualifications. As part of their equestrian training, pupils are expected to play a full part in the daily running of the Equestrian Centre.

We have an all-weather ménage which enables horse riding tuition to continue all year round.

For those who do not have their own horse here, there are a number of school horses and ponies available, to enable the pupils to learn to ride to a proficient level. We cater for all range of pupils, including complete beginners and those who wish to ride purely for pleasure.

Pupils have the opportunity to take riding as part of their Physical Education GCSE course and as an element of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Sixth form pupils can study for their NVQ qualification alongside their other A level subjects; we offer training for Levels One and Two and the PTT.

Abbotsholme runs its own Pony Club every fortnight, for those aged between 7 and 18, aimed at both members of the school and external members. Members are able to work towards attaining the Riding and Road Safety test, the C test, D test, and D plus test. We also provide a non-residential ‘Summer Pony Camp’ alongside regular demonstrations and clinics.

A number of our pupils have the opportunity to take part in our inter-house show jumping and dressage teams and enter external competitions and events.

The stable yard is a popular place to be for our equestrian enthusiasts. A full programme of activities provides many opportunities for pupils to learn and to have fun.
