Four students from Abbotsholme’s Year 8 were paired with four students from Herlufsholm Skole, a beautiful, historic school in Denmark. Earlier this month, our Danish friends spent a long weekend here with us at Abbotsholme, experiencing our school days and boarding life, as well as a fun-filled weekend sharing trips and activities.

Then it was our turn to be the guests so last Thursday at Copenhagen airport we met up again with our hosts. After an evening settling in with our respective families, Friday was an exciting day of tourism in Copenhagen. The weather was very kind to us and we saw the wonderful city at its best in the glorious spring sunshine.  We visited historic sites, beautiful buildings and the city’s shops before embarking on a comprehensive river trip around the city’s waterways, including of course the famous statue of the little mermaid, ending the day with a wonderful meal.

Saturday was spent at school with the host pupils (yes, on a Saturday) in the impressive buildings and grounds of the 500-year-old school situated near Naestved town. However, we had the afternoon to prepare for the highlight of our trip: the Ball. Herlufsholm holds several balls every year, to which all students, staff and parents are invited. The food was wonderful, the school’s formal apartments are opened and there is also a disco for the pupils with traditional Danish dancing later in the evening. I was very proud of the Abbotsholme students, who participated with gusto, showed their sociable personalities and were great ambassadors for our school.

Sunday was spent with the host families so everyone was shown a different side of Danish culture: including churches, shopping centres, Roskilde cathedral, the Viking museum, traditional food and the local town.

On Monday we had to go to school again. After classes, we had a look round the boarding houses and we were also shown the school’s private museum, which was amazing collection of natural history and physics. Then it was time to say goodbye to our friends and come home.

It was a wonderful trip. Herlufsholm is a fantastic school and we were lucky to have such kind hosts. It was a great experience for the Abbotsholme students, who were brave enough to be away from home in a new culture; we learnt a lot about Denmark and made lots of new friends. Round Square continues to help our students through these wonderful exchanges and we are very grateful for the opportunities it offers us to travel and grow.
