On Friday 20 January, nine students and I travelled to 'Awesome Walls' to compete in the second round of the WBL. This centre focuses specifically on bouldering as a means by which a climber can improve, unencumbered by safety equipment such as harness, ropes and karabiners; instead, it allows the climber to push themselves harder, above deep foam crash mats.
The competition has 25 problems to attempt and uses a simple points scoring system, 10, 7, 4 and 1 depending on how many attempts are made before finding success. Having won the junior round in the first event Joseph Heeley was keen to make it two in a row, and was certainly climbing well. Other students climbing well included Sam Wiegert who is showing rapid improvement, and Nadan Cox.
The students all enjoyed the music, atmosphere and problem solving nature of the competition. Congratulations to Sam Weigert who won the male junior (U16) category. Full results are available at the link below.
