It has been another busy afternoon for the girls out on the Netball courts. With six sides out against two separate opposition schools the pressure was on; but as we are proving more and more, we can take the pressure and come out on top! At home we hosted Denstone College. After our original games were cancelled we were able to help each other out by putting together today’s fixture. All three games were exciting to watch; real end to end stuff with some excellent displays from both teams of centre court play, strong defending and lovely shooting.
The U12 team won 20–1. This was a very encouraging game to watch. The play was strong and the confidence of the girls was high. Lorna Cooper was on fine shooting form, with her back up buddy Harriet Cox moving effectively around the circle area, feeding the ball into her well. In the centre Enya Collier played another excellent game and is proving to be an excellent all round player. In defence we had Daisy Bennie and Romy Haynes playing their hearts out, with tremendous results. They made it difficult for the opposition to break into their attacking end. Hope Wilderspin made her debut and we even had a brief encounter from Rhiannon Holland, who has been visiting us for the past couple of days. Player of the match was Romy Haynes.
The U13 team drew 8–8. This was a fiercely contested game with Abbotsholme pulling ahead, then Denstone fighting back. Going into the final quarter, Abbotsholme were trailing by two goals but some excellent shooting from Annabelle Lane and Sky Usher, backed up with sound defending from Sara Walker and Megan Nunn, enabled the team to pull the score line back to a draw. The players of the match were Megan Nunn and Minnie Burgess-Lumsden.
Although the U14/U15 team lost 14–5 the game was quick and exciting. We appeared to lose our way a little in the second quarter, which enabled Denstone to pull ahead, leaving us too much to do. Charlotte Thornewill played a lovely central position, with Georgina working hard in defence. The player of the match was Charlotte Thornewill.
Three other Abbotsholme teams travelled over to Wrekin College where they had a tough afternoon. The senior team had a hard match and lost out to a very strong opposition, who were training for a forthcoming county tournament; however, the team fought well and there were some lovely moves from a number of our girls. The U15s also had a hard match. With a few players missing there were some last minute positional changes. The third team to travel over to Shropshire were the U14 team and they pulled off an outstanding victory. The team played well together and are really being to string together some lovely play. Their final score was Abbotsholme 22 – Wrekin 10.
Well done to all the teams another promising afternoon for our ladies.
