Once again the girls were out in force yesterday, with six teams out and about playing netball. At home the U10 & U11’s had a fantastic match against Yarlet. The play was end-to-end stuff, watched by some very excited parents, filling the sideline. The final score was 10-8 to Abbotsholme. Olivia Player had an outstanding game, scoring 7 out of the sides 10 goals; her play in the centre of the court also made a huge contribution to the team’s victory. Her little sidekick, Harriet McFarland, scored the other 3 goals, which was a very special achievement as this was her debut game. Hollie Wood played a strong defensive role and linked up nicely with Hannah Jeffers in the centre. The whole team deserve a huge pat on the back not just for a well deserved victory, but also for providing such excitement and entertainment on a chilly afternoon! The 'Player of the Match' was Olivia Player.
Our other five teams headed over the hill to Denstone College, where we had a mixed bag of results. The U12`s started strongly and were drawing at half time; however, Denstone fought back during the second half and pulled off a narrow victory. The final score was Abbotsholme 7 Denstone 11. The U13 team continued with their winning ways after a fiercely fought game. Their final score was Abbotsholme 13 Denstone 11. The whole team played extremely well, being tight in defence and strong in attack. There was another victory for our U14 girls, too. The Witcomb girls were shooting consistently and Joanna Walker held the centre of the court well. In defence we had Victoria Harker making her mark, along with Sanne van Vroenhoven and Ellie Palmer making it very difficult for Denstone to find a way through into their attacking third.
We also fielded an U16 team, which consisted of our current U15 team plus Charlotte Thornewill and Katey Gardiner. The girls got off to a flying start, playing some lovely netball and by half time they were leading by 7 goals. Abbotsholme lost out in the end; however, the girls played out of their skins and can look forward to their next game with great confidence. Our senior netballers had a tough afternoon but the game was of an excellent standard. Abbotsholme lost but there were excellent performances from Alex Kuster, Lucy Darling and Annabel Gill.
Having over 70 Abbotsholme girls out representing Abbotsholme yesterday is something for the school to be very proud of. I am certainly very proud of all the girls, who deserve great praise.
