Year 7-9 Drama

Drama at KS3 focuses on students developing their 5C’s – creativity, confidence, co-operation, communication and commitment. Each year students will follow a curriculum map that includes developing practical skills such as physical theatre, mime, characterisation, and comedy, but also includes exploring more serious issues such as justice, drugs and alcohol, bullying, and poverty.

GCSE Drama

Current Year 11: GCSE Drama helps students to develop an understanding of many creative and challenging activities. Students are assessed through a series of controlled assessment options including practical choices such as devised thematic work, improvisation, physical theatre, script work or theatre in education or technical choices such as set design, costume or lighting.  During these practical controlled assessments, students are assessed on both the process – how well they work together in a team, their ability to reflect upon their work in progress and the drama vocabulary that they use – and the practical – how clearly they portray a character, a clear awareness of audience and their understanding of genre and style. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed upon developing the analytical and evaluative skills required in order to succeed in the written exam at the end of year eleven. These skills are developed in the form of an ongoing, reflective drama journal.

New Specification from Sept 2016: From September 2016, GCSE Drama students will follow a new specification. As part of their course, they will focus on three main components:  

  • Devising Theatre, in which learners will research and explore a stimulus, work collaboratively and create their own devised drama.
  • Presenting and Performing Texts, in which learners will develop and apply theatrical skills in acting or design by presenting a showcase of two extracts from a performance text.
  • Drama: Performance and Response, in which learners will explore practically a performance text to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of drama and will analyse and evaluate a live theatre performance.

As with the previous specification, students will still be assessed on their ability to work as part of a team and on their creative input to projects. They will also be expected to attend additional rehearsal sessions as part of their usual timetabled lessons. Students will also have the chance to go to the theatre at least three times within the course of a year as a means to expand their theatrical knowledge of style and genre.

A Level Drama

A-Level Drama and Theatre Studies provides students with the opportunity to theoretically and practically explore practitioners, plays and styles of theatre in much more depth than at GCSE. In Year 12, students explore two contrasting play texts, one through the methods of a theatre practitioner. They also perform either a monologue or a duologue. In Year 13, students are encouraged to let their creativity take over in the form of a devised project using a varied range of styles and practitioners as a stimulus. They also explore a set text from a period of history.
