Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

We follow an Edexcel created scheme of work for Key Stage 3 that fully prepares students to access the demands of GCSE. Our Year 7’s start their historical journey in Medieval England, looking at religion, disease and Monarchies. A world study focuses on the Crusades. Once students reach year 8 we continue chronologically into the Tudors and Stuarts, the English Civil War and the restoration of the monarchy. A world study focuses on Slavery and British Empire. Before reaching GCSE students have the opportunity to study various 20th Century conflicts, the Holocaust and evaluate how significant changes have been made throughout History. Each unit of work is assessed with an exam, rigorous teacher feedback and self-assessment.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11: GCSE)

Pupils follow the new Edexcel 9-1 specification. Our topic of Medicine through Time gives students the opportunity to study fascinating individuals and events, such as Vesalius and the Black Death from medieval to modern times. Students also delve deeper into the theme by learning about a particular Historic Environment, we focus on Medicine on the Western Front 1914-1918.

Furthermore our early modern depth study on Elizabethan England offers an insight into key moments in our history, students have the opportunity to study, events such as the Spanish Armada and Elizabethan Exploration that have helped shape Britain today. Students have the chance to study ideologies and civilisations that have shaped the world we live in today through the topic of the Superpowers and the Cold War students are able to reflect on the wide diversity of human experience with an opportunity to study post WW2 societies of different countries during one of the most intense events of the C20th. Through our Modern Depth study students will learn about German history in depth, exploring the complexity of Weimar Germany and the historical significant of the establishment of Nazi Germany

Sixth Form

Our topic of Russia, 1917-91: from Lenin to Yeltsin gives students the opportunity to study the growth of the Bolsheviks, through to the rise and fall of Communism. Students will focus on themes and Historical interpretations.

Furthermore our depth study on The German Democratic Republic 1949-90 offers an insight into Germany after WW2, students have the opportunity to study, events such as the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the GDR. Our final topic of Poverty, public health and the state in Britain c1780-1939 allows students to reflect on the development and changes with the health and welfare system of Britain leading to what is in place today. In addition, the opportunity to study any period in History is available during the Historical Enquiry part of the course, the chance to study Roman’s or Greeks is now a possibility!
