Abbotsholme Success in A level & BTECs

Pupils and staff at Abbotsholme School are celebrating success in their A Level and BTEC results. A 99% pass rate has been achieved and all students on A Level courses are moving on to their first choice university destinations; this is testimony to the hard work of teaching staff and pupils and commitment of the pupils. The overall pass rate of A*- B grades is 80% showing a continuing upward trend, and reflecting the ongoing investment in raising academic standards for our inclusive intake of pupils.

The popularity of BTEC subjects continues to rise and with a 100% pass rate over the past three years the courses in Sport, Agriculture, Outdoor Education and now Performing Arts offer our students the chance to develop practical skills and a project management approach that sets them up well for the demand of university and the working world.

In addition, the EPQ, which involves our students choosing their own subjects and undertaking an independent enquiry, has had tremendous success with 100% of grades in the A-B range. All Lower Sixth students will have the opportunity to follow this path in 2017-18.

Headmaster Matthew Boud-Self said, “Pupils and staff have worked hard for an impressive set of results that create secure futures for the 2017 leavers. We wish these students every success in their next steps and we trust that their time at Abbotsholme has led them to truly know themselves and to make wise decisions as they embark on their journey in the wider world. As Old Abbotsholmians they will always be welcomed back to share their stories. Looking to the future, Abbotsholme School will be defined by high expectations, positive character development and academic rigour.”

Isobel Brown, from Ashbourne, was awarded a Triple Distinction in BTEC Sport Level 3, equivalent to 3 A Levels, along with a B in Biology. Isobel is taking up an offer to study Sports Science at Birmingham University. She is part of the GB Ski team and will continue to study and develop her skiing. She is an exceptional sports woman and a dedicated student and we wish her all the best for a very bright future.

Alice Wood, from Chesterfield, achieved three As in Biology, Chemistry and Maths as well as a distinction in Agriculture. Alice has an offer from the University of Nottingham to study International Agricultural Science but has decided to move straight into the working world and has accepted a higher level apprenticeship with an accountancy firm in Sheffield, where she hopes to specialise in Chartered Tax and Accountancy.

International student Yannick Segent gained an A* in German, an A in Chemistry and Bs in French and Spanish and is going on to study International Politics. However, he has chosen to defer for a year whist he spends nine months in Shanghai learning Chinese whilst living with a host family.

Abbotsholme is a school filled with individuals, where each is encouraged to find the best version of themselves and to follow their own path to success through the many and varied opportunities offered to them during their time here.

Abbotsholme School’s 2017 A Level cohort with all go in different directions but they will all have their starting point in common. Abbotsholme hopes that they will all return to tell their stories.
