Summer 2010 Letter from the Headmaster

Dear Parents,

I write to you on Sunday afternoon, still warmed by the embers of a glorious Summer Gathering.  I am sure that those of you who were able to be here will agree with me that it was a splendid occasion.

The Summer Gathering concert on Friday was magical with many high notes, James Mitchell deserving a special mention for his extraordinary ability on the guitar.

During speeches on Saturday morning, Amy Wilson, the Head of School, opened proceedings with her memories of her time at Abbotsholme, telling us how lessons learned have enabled her to fashion her future.  Simon Pearson, an Old Abbotsholmian and Night Editor of The Times newspaper, gave us a fascinating insight into how his education at Abbotsholme had nurtured a real independence of action and thought which had proved invaluable to him in his career as a journalist.  In my speech, I reflected on the past, present and future.

The official opening of the David Snell Building by David’s widow, Delphine, was followed by a hog-roast lunch and athletic sports.  After a presentation by the Chair of Governors in the theatre, Year 10 pupils performed a very humorous ‘History of England’ in the Roseyard, and this was followed by the Barn Dance led by Tom Palmer and his band, ‘Wallop the Cat’!

We have just said a sad farewell to our leavers at the Founder’s Memorial Service at Reddie’s Grave.  This is always a solemn and moving occasion, and entirely fitting as our last event in the school year.

I do hope that you managed to attend Summer Gathering because my description does not do the weekend justice.  I would like to thank all who helped and worked hard throughout the three days, especially Racheal and the catering team, and Steph Walker and the APA Committee for keeping us fed and refreshed throughout.

Heather, Meg and I wish you a restful and peaceful summer, and time to catch up with friends and family.  I hope you enjoy reading The Abbotsholmian, and please look at our website which will remain active throughout the summer.

I leave you with a piece of poetry from the German poet Goethe:

No matter what you face in life,

if your passion is great enough

you will find the strength to succeed.

Without passion, life has no meaning,

so put your heart, mind and soul even into your smallest acts.

This is the essence of passion.

This is the secret of life.

From your passionate Headmaster,

Glad Day, Love and Duty.
