Flaxfield House

Flaxfield provides a homely environment for girls from Year 5 up to Year 9. Situated beside the swimming pool and equestrian centre and a short walk from the farm, woodland Dingle, tennis courts, sports hall and fields it is ideally situated to make the most of the extensive outdoor space. Many of the girls bring bicycles and enjoy riding around the site after school.

Inside the house there is a large, spacious lounge with sofas, beanbags, a TV, piano and table football as well as lots of books and board games. There is a small kitchen area where girls prepare snacks in the evening and sit in the dining area adjacent to the kitchen. There is a large, light bathroom with plenty of storage space for each girl.

The three dormitories are organised by age groups and girls share bunk beds and have their own wardrobe, desk, shelves and pin board which they can personalise with photographs and fairy lights.

A team of house staff led by the Housemistress supervise Flaxfield during the evenings and weekends. Girls may choose to full board all term, weekly board from Monday to Friday or flexi board for several nights during the week. Year 9 boarders are given responsibilities within the house and are like big sisters to the younger boarders. Everyone contributes to the smooth running of the house by completing regular jobs.

All meals are in the Dining Hall during the week and girls enjoy a more relaxed in-house breakfast and brunch during weekends. There is a movie night every Thursday with additional treats and the prestigious awards of ‘Flaxfield Star’ for the most positive girl of the week and ‘Room of the Week’ for those who have worked particularly well as a team.

There is a wealth of enrichment activities on offer after school each day such as climbing, dance, tennis, and swimming, Young Farmers, art and debating. Academic staff are on duty after school should any girls need support with homework or revision. Trips further afield usually take place during the weekends and include weekly shopping, countryside walks, as well as bowling, trampoline parks and the cinema.

Staff offer outstanding pastoral care for the girls and ensure they get to know everyone’s strengths and areas for development so that they may be supported and encouraged to try new things and develop their expertise. Staff are on hand for girls to talk about their day, any concerns they have and to provide help with homework and organisation for trips and to ensure that music practice is completed.

Girls receive an induction from staff and communication with parents is regular through emails, phone calls and photographs being sent home. There is a safe for the safe storage of pocket money and passports and special dietary and medical needs can be catered for after discussion with the school medical staff and catering team.

Regular events take place throughout the year with other boarding houses so that there is a smooth transition from Flaxfield to Orchard in Year 10.

Weekly house meetings ensure that the girls contribute ideas to the development of the Flaxfield and there are opportunities to speak to independent listeners who visit each term. There is a lot of fun and laughter in Flaxfield so if you would like to try boarding at Abbotsholme do come and visit.
