Ohmigod You Guys: Legally Blonde at Abbotsholme

The final week of the spring term saw this year’s school musical, Legally Blonde, take to the stage - bringing together months of rehearsal, commitment and collaboration from pupils and staff. It was another professional-standard performance, with the cast clearly getting both the humour - especially the more subtle moments - and the energy needed to carry the show.

Many of our Sixth Form students took on the lead roles, balancing rehearsals alongside their A Level studies. That in itself is no small task, and it made their performances all the more impressive. For many, this marked their final Abbotsholme musical, and there was a real sense of how far they’ve come - not just in performance ability, but in confidence and presence on stage.

Kyle’s performance as Professor Callahan struck just the right balance of self-assured confidence and underlying darkness, while Molly as Paulette was completely convincing - it was easy to forget you were watching a pupil as she fully embodied the role. As Elle Woods, Head Girl Miya brought more than the ‘ditzy blonde’ stereotype often associated with the character, delivering a performance with subtle humour and a real sense of growing self-confidence through the performance that added something more to the role.

A particular highlight of the show was the dance numbers throughout. It was great to see more modern, high-energy choreography woven in, clearly supported by the growing range of dance opportunities now available at Abbotsholme.

Audience favourites included:
“The jail scene was brilliant - everyone in the orange overalls with the skipping ropes!”
“Kyle’s dancing was so impressive, I don’t know how he managed to sing that well at the same time!”
“I loved the Delta Nu dances. All the pom-poms and pink college outfits… there were loads of them and it just felt really fun.”

There were also a few unexpected moments. Mrs Molloy, Mr Copson and Mr Hobbs all made appearances, while Directors Mr Donald and Mr Lewis stepped onto the stage themselves - delivering iconic performances that stood out as unexpected moments within the show. Beyond the humour, these moments reflect something deeper about life at Abbotsholme. When staff take part, it reinforces a culture where everyone is encouraged to step forward, take risks and embrace new challenges. It shows pupils that growth comes from doing, not just observing. It also gives staff a renewed appreciation of what it takes to perform - standing under the lights, remembering lines, and delivering in front of an audience. That shared experience is part of what makes our community so strong.

As ever, a huge amount of work happens behind the scenes. Year 9 pupil George played a particularly impressive role, keeping sound and lighting running smoothly throughout with real technical skill - if you ever get the chance to see just how many buttons and dials are involved, you’ll appreciate what a colossal achievement this is. Meanwhile, the backstage team, led by Mrs Johnson, managed the fast-paced, often chaotic world behind the curtain. It may look seamless from the audience, but it’s a real reflection of teamwork - the Legally Blonde set was particularly HUGE - and a genuine “get stuck in” attitude, everything that sits at the heart of Abbotsholme.

We are incredibly fortunate to have such an energetic and dedicated Performing Arts department, led by Mr Lewis and supported by Mr Donald and Head of Music, Miss Zoeftig. The boundless energy and countless hours spent rehearsing - both in the evenings and at weekends - are a real testament to their commitment. It is this willingness to go above and beyond, and their genuine investment in seeing pupils grow in confidence and perform at their very best, that makes such a difference. That support extends far beyond the stage and is a key part of what makes Abbotsholme so special.

A sincere thank you also to the wider Abbotsholme community for coming to watch and support - the atmosphere across all performances made the experience all the more special for everyone involved.

We can't wait to hear what next year's musical will be...
