Outdoor Pursuits

Outdoor pursuits at Abbotsholme capture the very essence of our school, aligning seamlessly with our core values and the timeless principles of outdoor education.

Challenge, resilience, courage, connecting with the environment and an adventurous approach to learning are at the core of the outdoor pursuits our pupils experience. The outdoors offers our educators and pupils the opportunity to build positive relationships, beyond the classroom, enhancing self-awareness, and deepening their understanding of others.

Our outdoor pursuits aim to provide adventurous and challenging experiences for pupils to develop their skills, qualities and attitudes that will contribute to their personal development. In doing so, careful consideration is given to the individual learning needs and abilities of pupils, their safety and welfare.

Annual Hikes

Annual hikes are a long-standing and treasured tradition at Abbotsholme, reflecting our deep connection to the outdoors and the spirit of our school. It is a time of year which offers opportunities for personal growth, fostering new friendships and strengthening our sense of community.

Each October, our school takes a break from the regular curriculum for three days (or two days for Prep School) to embark on annual hikes. Pupils, alongside teaching staff, tackle a variety of hiking routes across the UK, exploring some of the country’s most renowned walking destinations, including the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Snowdonia and the Lake District. During this time, our Pre-Prep pupils engage in extended walks and activities on the school estate.

Duke of Edinburgh

Pupils complete Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE in summer of Year 9, autumn of Year 11 and summer of Year 12 respectively. Bronze is assessed over two days in the Derbyshire and Staffordshire countryside, with a single overnight stay. Silver has a 2 day practise near Buxton and a 3 day  and 2 night assessed expedition based in Edale.

Gold practise and assessed expeditions both take place in Eryri (Snowdonia) National park and get to immerse themselves in the ideal mountain environment. They then have the option to complete their Gold expedition on foot, by boat, or by bike. This will include at least one night wild camping. The assessed is 4 days and 3 nights where the pupils must operate independently and unsupported.

Leadership

Our Sixth Form pupils have the opportunity to adopt more leaderships role across outdoor pursuits. Those interested in gaining experience and leading junior activities are encouraged to take on responsibilities, which are designed to enhance their confidence, maturity, and provide valuable insights into planning and executing activities. This provides them with the opportunity to serve as role models in outdoor activities.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

During Wednesday afternoon activities, pupils have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of outdoor pursuits, including climbing on our indoor climbing wall, running, and more.

Senior Expeditions

In the summer term, our senior pupils complete a mini expedition, involving a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering, canoeing, climbing, cycling, hiking, abseiling and more.
