Independent Schools of the Year

At Abbotsholme, we are building on a proud tradition of hockey through the launch of our Hockey Performance Pathway - a high-performance programme designed to develop ambitious, well-rounded players.

Combining specialist coaching with competitive match play and individual player development, the pathway gives pupils the opportunity to train in an ambitious environment with high standards and a strong hockey culture. Players will develop their technical skills, tactical understanding, and confidence on the pitch, while also building the resilience and mindset needed to progress towards National League hockey and National Age Group selection.

The hockey performance programme aims to develop the whole player through:

Performance Training Sessions -

Hockey Performance Players will access two additional pitch sessions each week, providing a higher level of training intensity and challenge.

Sessions will focus on advanced technical development - including aerial distribution, drag flicking, and set-piece responsibilities - alongside game-based scenarios designed to replicate the demands of high-level hockey. Players will be challenged to apply skills under pressure, make effective decisions, and perform within a competitive team environment.

Alongside individual development, coaches will help players build a deeper understanding of their role within the team and how they can positively influence overall performance.

Team Sessions & Matchplay -

Hockey Performance Players will continue to train and compete with their school squads throughout the season, alongside a full fixture programme and approximately three hours of team training per fortnight.

For younger players, these sessions provide valuable opportunities to apply skills in competitive match situations, developing confidence, decision-making, and game understanding through regular play.

As players progress through the pathway, the focus increasingly shifts towards tactical awareness, leadership, and influencing team performance. Senior players will be encouraged to drive standards, support teammates, and take greater responsibility within the team environment, while helping to develop younger players within the programme.

Through regular training and match play, players will develop the ability to influence games both individually and collectively - an essential attribute for progression to higher levels of hockey.

Strength and Conditioning -

In addition to pitch-based training, performance players will follow structured strength and conditioning and aerobic development programmes designed to support the physical demands of high-level hockey.

The programme will focus on developing speed, strength, power, endurance, and resilience, helping to enhance performance while reducing injury risk. Players will have access to the school gym facilities, alongside dedicated time within the weekly timetable for supervised or guided training sessions that complement their technical and tactical development on the pitch.
