Head's Highlights

Sport continues to be a powerful thread running through life at Abbotsholme, and this term has given us much to celebrate. Our U16 hockey team delivered an outstanding performance, finishing as Staffordshire County champions before going on to secure second place in the Midlands. To compete and excel against schools sometimes three times our size is a remarkable achievement. It speaks not only to the dedication of our pupils and the expertise of our coaches, but to the strength of our small-school model.
When a child is truly known, their strengths are nurtured, their areas for development are supported, and they are given the confidence to grow. At Abbotsholme, that personalised approach allows our pupils to flourish, and, as this result shows, sometimes smaller really does mean mightier.
Our Prep pupils also represented the school at the hockey tournament at Newcastle-under-Lyme School. While the results were not quite what they had hoped for, the experience itself marked an important step in the continued development of sport within the Prep School. Most importantly, it was fantastic to see pupils embracing the opportunity and enjoying the tournament against students from an older age group.

Our production of Legally Blonde was a real highlight of the Spring Term. As my first Abbotsholme musical, I was - like many in the audience - completely blown away by the performances and the overall standard of the show. I even managed a small cameo role as the ‘Principal of Harvard’. It didn’t stretch my acting abilities too far, but it did serve as a timely reminder of the confidence these performances help to build in our pupils. The ability to stand up, perform, and deliver in front of an audience is something that will stay with them long beyond their time at school.
My sincere thanks go to the staff who gave so generously of their time, evenings, weekends, and countless hours behind the scenes, to deliver such a high-energy and memorable production. Their dedication to ensuring every pupil can shine, both on stage and beyond, is truly what makes Abbotsholme so special.
The first Lambing Live event provided a wonderful opportunity to connect learning with real-world experience. We were delighted to welcome pupils from local schools and colleges who are aspiring towards futures in agriculture, animal science and veterinary fields. At a time when national conversations - led by organisations such as the National Farmers' Union - are increasingly focused on bringing agriculture into education, it is a powerful reminder of how fortunate we are at Abbotsholme. Here, these experiences are not an addition to the curriculum; they are part of everyday life. The feedback from the event was excellent, and we look forward to continuing to build opportunities that connect our pupils, and the wider community, with meaningful, hands-on learning.
Our Prep Easter Egg Hunt was another joyful highlight. With sunshine finally on our side, it was wonderful to see families exploring the grounds whilst solving clues and earning their chocolate treats. I even found myself persuaded into a rather warm fluffy rabbit costume - something I am learning to expect at Abbotsholme is the unexpected! Most importantly, it was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces enjoying time together as a community.
It was also a pleasure to welcome so many prospective families for our recent Discovery Day. Taking place during British Science Week, the day offered a vibrant snapshot of life at Abbotsholme. From “Minecraft TNT Science” to engineering challenges through den building in Outdoor Education, pupils were immersed in learning that was active and that nurtured their natural curiosity, something we do so well at Abbotsholme. The day concluded with a lovely Mother’s Day tea for our Prep families, both current and prospective - a reminder of the warm, welcoming community that sits at the heart of the school.
What underpins all of these moments is the breadth of distinctive opportunities available to our pupils. From upcoming experiences such as our first Interschool Adventure Race, DofE expeditions and no doubt many more educational trips, to everyday moments like lambing, our thriving Outdoor Education provision, and opportunities for service through clubs such as Interact and Round Square - our pupils are continually encouraged to step forward, contribute, and lead.
We see this most clearly in the actions of our pupils themselves. From Dinara’s leadership in organising Interact initiatives, including a charity home clothes day and supporting extracurricular activities, to a group of pupils coming together to create and lead their ‘Big Bake’ - raising money for The Oasis while bringing the community together in a Bake Off-style competition. Freddie and Emma’s work developing the front-of-school planters, alongside the commitment shown by both staff and pupils during lambing duties, further reflects this spirit of initiative and responsibility.
Our Sixth Formers continue to set the standard, working collaboratively to plan and deliver their end-of-term celebrations with a real sense of ownership, organisation and pride. They take responsibility not only for the success of these events, but for creating an inclusive atmosphere for others to enjoy. House Singing provided another opportunity for pupil-led leadership, with Kyle and Emma confidently guiding Wainwright and Palmer, bringing energy, direction and a strong sense of team spirit. After the Easter break, we will no doubt see even more examples of this - the confidence and character that define an Abbotsholme pupil - as they take on the role of tour guides for our Open Day on Saturday 9th May.
At Abbotsholme, education extends far beyond the classroom. It is shaped by experience, strengthened by community, and driven by a belief that every child should have the opportunity to discover what they are capable of. And this term has been a powerful reminder of exactly that.
