Alkins School Of Dance
September 2019 saw the Alkins school of dance join Abbotsholmes growing portfolio of courses on offer to students.
The courses offered by the Alkins School of Dance at Abbotsholme are a real alternative in vocational training. Each student is valued as an individual and will gain the vocational skills and academic qualifications needed to succeed in the modern world. The carefully balanced curriculum combines high quality vocational dance and musical theatre classes with the excellent academic opportunities offered at Abbotsholme.
Places on the Pre-Vocational and Vocational Courses at all levels are by assessment or audition. Each course fee is in addition to the term fee set by Abbotsholme and one full terms notice must be given in writing to withdraw from any course. 2019/20 fees are £895 for Senior School Pre-Vocational and Vocational Courses.
Senior School Pre-Vocational Course (Years 7-9)
For students in Year 7 to 9 the Pre-Vocational Course continues their technical and physical development. Students at this level dance for approximately 8 hours per week. In addition to classical ballet, modern dance and tap extra contextual classes are added which include Repertoire and Jazz. Many dance students at this level choose not to do sport, and where possible are able to fit in additional dance classes at no extra cost. Students who want to participate fully in sport are able to do this throughout their time in the senior school if they wish. In fact a number of students have used their dance skills as a part of GCSE and A Level PE. All students working at this level are encouraged to take the Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance Professional Examinations.
Senior School Vocational Dance Course (Years 10-13)
From Year 10 the Vocational Dance Course further expands the opportunities for students. Dancers at this level dance for approximately 10 to 12 hours a week, depending on their academic and sport options. In addition to the dance styles studied to date classes are taken in contemporary dance and all are introduced to the Edexcel BTEC qualifications. These examinations carry A Level equivalents (they are set by the same board) and at A Level carry valuable UCAS points needed for university entry.
Recent years have seen Alkins School of Dance students achieve outstanding results on this course with all students achieving A or A* at all levels. As our sixth formers have the full range of academic subjects to choose from alongside the dance course, we ensure that dancers are well qualified for continued study.
Senior School Vocational Musical Theatre Course (Years 10-13)
Students who want to widen their studies can also include Musical Theatre in their studies. In addition to dance classes they study voice, stagecraft and dramatic performance skills. These students also take the BTEC qualification using suitable units that reflect their range of performing skills. This course has approximately 10 hours of guided learning a week tailored to the students needs.
